Working Remotely: The New Norms of the Workplace

The workplace is always changing. Allocadia has embraced the fact that the best people for the job may not live where our office is, and we love this! Having a dynamic team with different experiences, histories, and expertise makes us better. By embracing and actively recruiting remote team members we are able to build a world class team.

The remote experience may not be for everyone, so we chatted with Allocadians who work outside of our HQ in Vancouver. Currently around 20% of our team works remotely in places such as San Francisco, Toronto, Austin, Seattle, Cork and London. We sat down (virtually) with Eve, Jessie and Sam to find out what they had to say about working remote!

What’s the benefit of working remotely?

Eve: Flexibility and the ability to focus. Our customers are in all different time zones so some of my calls can be at odd times, when working from the office I tried to condense everything into certain hours, now I can have more flexibility in my schedule and make sure I have time for my personal life and my dog!

Jessie: With a young family I want to be present with them and living outside the city means my commute takes away from that. Working remotely is ideal for me because most of my work is very focused or 1:1. Previously working from an office I felt a sense of guilt when I spent any time on social elements, from home I can plug in and be much more focused and efficient.

Sam: I thrive on flexibility which is probably why I enjoy working remotely. I know I don’t have the same experience as people working from the office, and that’s okay. I get to experience the “joy of missing out” where I can focus where I need to and have opportunities to be creative in making things work.

What challenges do you face not being in the office?

Jessie: It can be hard to stop working when at home, especially when you’re deep into something. There’s of course a feeling of missing out on what’s happening in the office so I try to maximize my days in office as much as I can to align with things.

Eve: There will always be some things you miss out on, whether it’s lunches or meeting colleagues, plus there are some logistical challenges like others not realizing you’re in a different time zone. These can be overcome when you plan for them. Having worked in the office previously I have great relationships so still feel well connected and I don’t hesitate to ask for what I need.

Sam: You need to market and put yourself out there more than you think, but it pays off. People in the office don’t always have sympathy for what it’s like to work remote or something will come across not as you intended it to on Slack, so you need to know when to change your approach and always be ready to try a different avenue to get what you’re looking for.

How are you supported in working remotely?

Sam: This is my third job in a row where my boss has been in a different city; it’s not my first rodeo. But each experience is different. Allocadia has a respect for flexibility that isn’t always the case, but this establishes remote work as part of the culture. Having the executive team as ambassadors of remote workers has had a positive impact in how it trickles down.

Eve: Tools like Slack and video conferencing are key in communications and incorporating remote works has become engrained in how things function, whether it’s sharing photos of new hires to put a face to a name or creating best practices so whether you’re in or out of the office the experience is always a good one.

Jessie: What’s great is that at Allocadia, it’s not abnormal to be remote. Remote work is built into the company structure and there are policies around it, it’s not an afterthought. Having quality equipment and tools help as well. It awesome to have desk in the office when I do come in, it makes me feel so welcome in the space and like there’s no difference from those who are in or out of the office.

What’s something everyone should understand about working remotely themselves or working with remote team members?

Jessie: It takes a certain type of person to work remotely. You need to be purposeful in building relationships, take ownership of your role and results, and value the flexibility that this offers.
Get out there and communicate – keep an open conversation about what’s working and what’s not so everyone can find the right balance.

Eve: I love working from home but know it would be a different experience if I didn’t follow some key rules. First is have a dedicated work space that is setup as your home office. Second, make yourself a routine and keep to it! These may sound simple, but this gives your structure and makes it easier to feel like there is some separation and you can step away from work at the end of the day.

Sam: Work with people you trust, overcommunicate everything, and find the right cadence. Early on invest in meeting people so you understand their roles and share with them how you can provide value. Building relationships is always important and as a remote team member it can be harder to do, but has a tremendous impact on your success.
